Our guest editor for this 2024 October edition of The Future Leaders Communiqué is Dr Erica Musgrove, a doctor in training at Alice Springs Hospital, who presents a compelling edition highlighting some of the challenges of providing patient care in rural and remote settings.
The edition includes a case from rural Queensland where a culmination of missed opportunities and systemic issues resulted in a poor patient outcome during an interhospital transfer. It’s a tragic sequence of events highlighting the importance of when and how to ask for help as well as how to provide help when it is sought.
The case and expert commentaries remind us to make the time to know what the limitations of practice are in our work environments, and to appreciate the contexts that our colleagues are working in when we are discussing interhospital patient transfers.
The expert commentaries are written by Dr Simon Judkins who is an Emergency Physician and a Past President of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and Dr Bridget Honan who is an emergency physician working in Grafton Hospital (Bundjalong Country), and with the Central Australian Retrieval Service in Mparntwe (Alice Springs).
